Keeping wellness programs compliant and worthwhile

Employers have been using wellness programs to promote better health among employees and help control health care costs for a number of years. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) wellness regulations were finalized in 2013 and became effective for 2014 plan years. ACA rules are just one set of regulations that impact workplace wellness programs. There are also federal regulations by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) governing wellness programs that were finalized in May 2016.

These three rules – combined with HIPAA and ERISA wellness rules – make for a lot of acronyms to keep track of. At Cigna, we’ve coined it the Wellness Regulatory Alphabet Soup!

It’s important to know that complying with one set of wellness rules and regulations does not necessarily ensure compliance with all the others. Because of these differences, employers should work with their legal counsel to ensure compliance with each set of regulations. Cigna is also here to help. Your Cigna Health Improvement Strategist will be able to work closely with you to identify wellness programs that work for your company and fit these regulations.

To learn more about the various regulations that must be considered, check out our Wellness Programs and Incentives page.

If you’re interested in designing a compliant health improvement program that helps deliver better health and long-term savings, consider Cigna MotivateMe®, a turnkey incentive program that gives your employees and their spouses* opportunities to earn rewards for taking charge of and improving their health. Cigna MotivateMe is easy to use, easy to communicate and easy to track engagement.

Committing to reducing opioid use among our customers

Opioid use disorder is affecting men, women and children throughout our country. U.S. residents consume 80% of the world’s supply of opioids1 and deaths involving opioids have quadrupled since 2000.2 In fact, in the United States, accidental opioid overdoses kill more people than motor vehicle accidents.3

Cigna is committed to reducing opioid use by 25% among our customers by 2019. As of April 2017, we are at 50% of our goal.4 And to date, more than 62,000 network doctors signed a pledge to reduce opioid use, and improve pain management and substance use treatments.4

To make a difference in opioid use disorder, Cigna is focused on the following areas.

  • Reduce overall consumption of opioids by 25%
  • Prevent addiction by identifying and engaging those at risk
  • Promote effective evidence-based treatment to improve outcomes and reduce costs
  • Adopt Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for opioid-prescribing with providers and consumers NOW
  • Stop the stigma by changing the "speak around" substance use disorders so more people seek care

Cigna Telehealth Connection helps provide access to medical and behavioral health care

Now, most medical plans through Cigna provide covered employees with access to telehealth services that offer employees more control when they need to see a doctor. Via video or phone, employees can connect with a board-certified doctor and get the care they need for a wide range of minor health conditions. What’s more, for covered services related to mental health and substance use, your employees also have access to telehealth specialists in the Cigna Behavioral Health network. These televisits can cost the same or less than in-office visits, and can be cost-effective alternatives to emergency rooms, convenience care clinics or urgent care centers.
